Just this morning during a breastfeeding class I cited the benefits of breastfeeding with relation to the possible reduction in cancer risks. A student said " why aren't we told this in mass publications and why aren't Doctors screaming this from the rooftops?" . After a mild discussion in breast-related health news and the absence thereof, I was thanked for the information and was told by a student that the possibility of reducing breast cancer "sealed the deal " for her and that she is determined to nurse for at least 2 years. Education DOES make a difference- especially when you hit them where it hurts so to speak.
I find that going on and on about benefits to baby, benefits to the environment, tends to fall on deaf ears. Since we are a self-centered culture, making it about the mother ( health benefit, cost, ease, etc) seems to be a better education tool, at least in my area.
