Dear Friends:
Today I went to the home of a 4-day old boy whose breastfeeding had been
deranged by hospital practice. The mother is very educated and articulate
and told me of all the mixed messages that were confusing. As in "We're
concerned about your baby's jaundice..................but we're not going to test
for it." She also mentioned all the 'breastfeeding is best' signs everywhere
but they were giving her baby 50 cc of formula at a time because they were
concerned about his weight loss.
They had scared her so much about sleeping with her baby that no one in
the family was getting any rest. She would nurse and be nodding off and be
doing things to keep herself awake. Her husband was also trying to stay awake
to help her. And the baby was crying because he was far away from her at
night.
She told me of being advised to get in bed once her membranes ruptured
because her feet would get wet otherwise. I couldn't help but laugh when I
heard that..........she and her husband both told me the doctor told them that!
I guess the doctor felt she'd be at risk of falling if her feet were
wet? Who knows.....
warmly,
