As Jan pointed out - there are many other avenues to enter the lactation
field besides starting as a LLL Leader or Peer Counselor. I did not mean for one
minute to neglect my good friends who are RD's, PT's, OTs, Social Workers or
other health care disciplines. I can think of several Medical Technologists who
are LCs as well as MPH and other public health professions. I shared my story
to illustrate that it was possible to get there without previous college
experience, although now I believe that has changed in order to sit the exam. The
studies I pursued as an LC and after certification supported the knowledge
previously acquired. Nursing school really did help "put it together" in some
instances but the clinical observations were/are priceless. I'm a late
bloomer.......to say the least. I fully encourage and support anyone who desires to enter
the profession.
Best regards,
Mary Kay Smith, RN, IBCLC
