Hi All,
When it comes to ethics in this world, many people don't have them. Sad,
but true. I firmly believe that "what goes around, comes around" and if you
screw someone for your own gain, you will get screwed worse later on.
When working with moms, I always make it clear that I am NOT an LC, nor do I
do hands on work. If they need that level of care I refer them to an LC who
I know to be respectable and good at her job. If I feel that a mom does not
need a pump (I rent Medela) I tell her. If she still wants one then I will
rent it to her. I will not sell her a full kit if all she needs is parts,
and I will not try to "suggestive sell" any thing else like books or extra
parts "just in case". I also ask the mom if she is WIC elible or on the WIC
program before proceeding with any rental or purchasing of products. WHy
should I make money on someone who can't afford it? If they are WIC
eligible, I refer them to WIC for help and assistance, and let the LC on
staff know that this mom will be coming to her.
Most of us give more of our time for free (with over the phone counseling,
and not charging when we should) than we should. We do this job because we
love helping moms and babies. I know I do. I am not in this for the money.
If I was I'd be as unethical as some people I know, selling things that
folks don't really need and not sending them to WIC when they are eligible
for it or on the program.
I don't know how we could ensure that all of us in the LC field are ethical
and honest. I know that if I know of someone who is out to get money
regardless, I do not refer to them at all.
