The easiest answer to your last question "do babies with weak sucks
improve?" is yes. Many do sooner than others. Much depends on how well
mother and baby can work together. This is a clear situation where the team
nature of breastfeeding is crucial.
There was an interesing paper about mag sulfate in JHL about 2 years ago
(if memory serves). You might want to check it out.
Keep in mind as well that many hypertensive moms in late pregnancy hav
ebeen given mag sulfate and their babies did not exhibit any apparnet
problems.
Given that the baby was preterm, I wonder if what you observed was more an
effect of that htan the mag sulfate by itself. Another consideration, of
course, is the interaction of prematurity and the possible effect of the
mag sulfate together. Who will know?
The messages (negative ones) mother is getting probably aren't helping any.
But you can let her know that others with similar dififculties ahve hung in
there an dbaby got better at doing what she wants to do: breastfeed.
