Re Attie's case of 3 month old with Salmonella:
I am not medically qualified, but this sounds to me like a baby with
secondary lactose intolerance caused by the Salmonella infection. Doctors
vary in their opinions re stopping breastfeeding and feeding a soy formula.
Some allow breastfeeding to continue, but many believe the gut recovers
quicker without any lactose at all, temporarily. Others think the
anti-infective properties in the breastmilk are worth the trouble the
lactose causes during this stage. Either way, full breastfeeding should be
resumed as soon as baby can tolerate large amounts of lactose again. The
oversupply problem may compound things as this would increase the lactose
load from large feeds of breastmilk. One sided feeding would be a good idea
here, to increase the proportion of fat in the feed. Partial feeding with
the soy formula may cause the supply to drop naturally from reduced
stimulation anyway.

The Salmonella is not in the milk, otherwise mum would be pretty sick too.
Baby must have picked it up off something. I would assume the doctor wants
to allow the gut to heal by avoiding the lactose for a short while. You
mention the baby was not sick enough to be admitted - breastfeeding
probably can be thanked for that. Recovery is usually much quicker in
breastfed babies. Reassure this mum that she should be breastfeeding
normally again fairly soon.
