I am not sure that there is any guidelines for the number of LCs required in 
a hospital setting. We are such a new profession that it hasn't truly trickled 
down to the various licensing agencies. I do know that the Ohio Dept of 
Health is asking if there are any IBCLCs on staff when they do their maternity 
licensure site visits. I received a call a few weeks ago from someone at one of 
our referring hospitals (I work at a children's hospital that is a tertiary care 
center) who is a CLC asking for a letter from us stating that if she needs 
assistance, she calls us for consults. Of course, our legal dept would not let 
us write that letter. I have our QA people looking to see if ODH has anything 
in writing since we have our site visit on Jan 4th. I am a RN, IBCLC, and my 2 
coworkers are RD, CLCs so I think my credentials will carry us.

Regarding JCAHO, again, I don't know if there is anything in writing but I  
do know that they ask about what kind of lactation services are available. Have 
you searched the JCAHO website to see if you can find anything? Do you have 
any QA people that you can ask to look into this for you?
