I smiled when I saw the posts about wishing the mothers didn't have
childbirth classes. I know that more than one health care provider that saw
my clients at WIC "wished" they didn't go to WIC. There is certainly a
"translation" between class and when the mother puts what she has "heard"
into practice. We all do this. Hear what we find is important to us and
forget the rest. It's a normal adult response to the overload of information
that is available these days.

I am absolutely sure that my words were switched around to fit someone else's
needs on more than one occasion. I remember a MD calling me in the clinic
and reading me the riot act for giving the education I was required to give.
This particular MD didn't want anyone telling her patients anything about
their health. She wanted to be the fountain from which all information
flowed. She should have heard what this mother told me about her!

I suggest that if you want to know what goes on in a class, call up the
instructor and ask to attend. That way everyone knows what is actually said
and you can laugh together at the "translation."
