Jan Barger's comment about mothers' babies having pacifiers shoved in their
mouths by hospital nurses who don't even bother to ask permission got me
going.

One of the reasons we put a FEEDING PLAN example in the R&A book was to
enable people who work with mothers to think about sharing such a plan with
mothers so that they WOULD be able to make an informed decision. Just the
other day, I received a call from a grandmother incensed (because her
daughter was) at the actions of a hopsital nurse who put a pacifier in
their baby's mouth and never asked permission in advance. They were SO
UPSET by this (contend this has made worse the baby's behavior at breast)
that they are writing to the hospital administrator and nursing supervisor
at the hospital where this occurred.

It seems to me that informed consent goes beyond simply saying, "I plan to
breastfeed." That is why that feeding plan includes things like telling
peopel WHO may feed the baby, HOW the baby may be fed, WHAT the baby may be
fed, etc. There is more to feeding than simply a breast and a bottle...
