Pauline,

I have no magic solutions to the nursing discomfort. But I suggest you
check out Brian Palmer's website http://www.brianpalmerdds.com

Has the child been examined closely by a dentist who understands that a
gap between front teeth is often associated with a thick labial frenulum
between the top lip and the gum? The motion of the tongue inside and the
direction of the resistance of the cheeks and lips are what help form the
dental arch and determine the direction in which teeth grow. If the child
has this, perhaps a labial frenotomy might eventually allow the gap to
disappear. I don't know if this could occur in time to preserve the
nursing experience, but the breastfeeding after the frenotomy would
theoretically help the teeth to normalize their position for the sake of
her future smile.

Jean
