Hi all,

No beating about the bush: after reading all the posts I am totally confused and things don't seem to make sense anymore.
If we want to decide whether there are two (or more) kinds of milk, we would probably first have to decide about the definition for 'kind'.
If we agree that milk changes constantly, then you could also say there are ten or hundred kinds of milk or even better: as many kinds as there are moms/babies.
I find it very hard to decide what to 'believe' about the 'evidence' in all the recent posts. Some of the 'evidence' being thrown in seems to be contradictory to other 'evidence'.
Are we sure we understand well what was being researched and said about the findings? What to read to get a good understanding...? Who's 'right'...?
How can we say that the fat content doesn't make any difference, if we also say that milk is fatter in an empty than in a full breast...?
If the latter is true, then it automatically *does* mean that taking baby off the first breast and switch him to the second although he is still drinking efficiently and effectively, will impact fat intake.
I do agree with Gonneke: we may feel things have changed, but they haven't. It's what we (think we) know that has changed, not the process.
Let's quit the stupid schedules and rules and watch the baby. If all is well, keep it like that. If it is not, use the knowledge we have about good latch and milk being fatter in an empty breast.
If the intervals wouldn't be that big due to scheduling, we probably wouldn't spend so much time on differences in fat content... ;-)

Warmly,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands
