Dear Friends:
     The loving caresses and attention of people that are not the mother are
certainly important to a baby. However, for a newborn, the primary need is
for the mother and the breast. The mother's body provides thermal,
vestibular, immunologic, cardiac, neurologic, and respiratory stability,
orientation and safety in a new world, and all the comfort, analgesia,
nutrition, hydration and other properties a baby needs to optimize the
transition from an internal world to an external one.
     You and I are talking about two different things.
