I found this quote of particular interest:
>There are problems with the crucifixion scene as a representation of God's
love for humanity. It presents a violent act as salvific.<

When I had my first child, in a Catholic hospital, there was a crucifix on
the wall opposite the bed. It was the first thing to catch my eye as I
looked around, in labour, for a focal point. (I should mention at this point
that I am not a Christian and that I had chosen this particular hospital
because of it's medical reputation.)
I did point out to the nursing staff that if there was to be a religous
image on the walls of a labour room, a nursing Madonna might have been more
appropriate and inspiring :)
