ALBERTA BREASTFEEDS: A Celebration of Breastfeeding

During the 70s artificial milk became the preferred method of providing nourishment to
infants. Recent research into the nutritional, immunological, emotional and financial
advantages of breastfeeding has resulted in a renewed interest in this method of delivery.

Discover the challenges health professionals  face with breastfeeding in our multicultural
society. Alberta Breastfeeds: a Celebration of Breastfeeding is a two-day conference for
lactation consultants, health professionals and concerned families interested in exploring issue
relating to breastfeeding.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
The keynote speaker for the Alberta Breastfeeds conference is researcher Dr. James McKenna
who will present: "When Stone Age Babies are Born to Space Age Parents: the Adaptive
Advantages of Breastfeeding and Sleeping Next to Your Baby."

Dr. McKenna is the Senior Researcher in the Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry at the
University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. He is internationally known for studies
of child care practices and SIDS. His research focus redefines what constitutes "normal"
infant sleep and the importance of infant/parent co-sleeping.

The Alberta Breastfeeds: a Celebration of Breastfeeding conference will take place on March
8 & 9
