Anyone who feels they need to stay in the closet to breastfeed for their own
safety has my complete sympathy. Self-determination for all people is one
of my guiding mottos in life, and I am hard pressed to imagine a situation
where I would 'out' a BF mother of an older child.

As my children are not only weaned, but rapidly flapping their wings to fly
from the nest, it is safe for me to speak out about the normalcy of
breastfeeding in childhood. I don't think I will get a child protection
worker hounding me if I do. There are many others on Lactnet who are as
safe as I am. We need to show solidarity with our friends who need it,
wherever they are.

To make the world a more child-friendly place, we need to talk about this in
forums where it usually isn't discussed. We need to normalize it. Those of
us who are in safe positions have a responsibility to help those who aren't.
I welcomed the closet breastfeeders out into the daylight, and I meant it.
My home is a breastfeeding-friendly area. Well, not much daylight here now
but come June we'll be begging for a little twilight.
