Kathy asks,

<<We noticed recently on the Medela collection and storage handouts the
guidelines have changed...room temp used to be 10 hours and I believe is
now down to 6. The Medela Rep was in today and did not know
why....suggested I ask the LCs who review for Medela...whom I believe
are on this list.>>

Since I did the original research for the breastmilk out at room temperature
for 10 hours, I would suggest that before the times are changed, that someone
replicate it before it is considered no longer valid.

To my knowledge no one has attempted to replicate what we did (which was, in
essence, to compare bacterial counts of breastmilk stored at room temp for 10
hours vs in the refrigerator for 10 hours. We did not look at all the other
components of the milk. ) However, if someone does do it, could you please do
it for 12 hours? We did 10 because we figured if a working mom was going into
Chicago by train from Wheaton, and didn't have access to refrigeration, it
would probably be about 10 hours between the time of her first pumping and coming
home to put it in the fridge. So it would be nice if someone else would look
at a longer time span.
