Dear Rob and all,
Some mothers find the sns cumbersome, some love it! Usually first I
try to sneak some expressed milk into the side of the baby's mouth with
an eye dropper or syringe while they are latched on to see if that
improves sucking and swallowing and baby's interest. If it works well
and the situation is warranted, then I will show mom the sns, still in
the wrappings, and discuss how it is used....how she can get the 'dropper
effect' herself with the sns. I ask her if she would like to try it.
In the case of baby's weight loss or slow gain, I agree with Jack
that the sns is definitely a win/win situation!! Get a necessary
supplement at the breast! Baby learns that food comes from mama! Also
stimulate the milk supply at the same time! Genius!! The more the
mom is committed to breastfeeding, it seems, the sns is viewed as a
helpful temporary tool.
If a mom does not want to use it, there are other options. Some
mothers prefer to pump and finger feed, cup feed, or bottle feed until
baby is nursing better.
Physics and chemistry are not my strong areas of study! But it was
explained to me once because of the physics of the sns, the milk comes
from the breast FIRST, whatever is there, and THEN from the sns. This
has been an encouraging, reassuring fact for many mothers. Anybody
out there care to explain/confirm this?
