Hey i have to say that i was quite ignorant on the SIDS studies as
they relate to the "back to sleep" campaign.

I still have my doubts, however and I wonder how many of the babies
that died sleeping on their tummies were in another room, formula
fed, or smothered by surrounding articles (stuffed toys, blankets,
etc.)? The results may be a bit skewed like the co-sleeping
studies. (of course sleeping on a couch, drunk with a baby is a high
risk situation. know what i mean?)

My daughter NEVER EVER slept on her back. Even if I was holding her,
she didn't sleep lying down in my arms (cradle). I tried her side
for a bit but she really almost INSISTED that she sleep on her
tummy. So I let her. So she's been on her tummy almost since day
one. My pediatrician even told me, sort of "off the record" (having
given me the standard back to sleep spiel) that because she was with
me and bf, he wouldn't worry too much as some babies just like to
sleep on their tummies.

I think it's fairer to take every case individually. Seems a bit
strange to compare it to carseat safety, statistically, as the
factors and situations are so completely different. Car seats are
not a matter of preference or choice on anybody's part. And I get
really, really mad at parents here where I live in the Bahamas who
drive HOLDING their babies or have toddlers STANDING in the car
(front and back seats!!! - *disgusted look*). That's certainly very
different than responsibly choosing to allow a baby to sleep in his/
her tummy on a firm, flat surface free of blankets and clutter -
don't you think?

MVHO.
