Dear Secretary Thompson:

As a pediatrician and a mother, I strongly support the Office of Women's
Health in it's efforts to get non-commercialized breastfeeding information to the
public. Dr. Suzanne Haynes has done a wonderful job working with the Ad
Council and the scientific community to prepare an effective, evidence-based
campaign. It is obvious that the formula industry also feels it will be an
effective campaign, and cut into their market, as they appear to be lobbying
vigorously in many venues to have the campaign stopped or changed to make it
ineffective!

Research has shown that women who have not breastfed do not feel guilty when
they are presented with scientific evidence about the risks they are taking
with their own and their children's health by not breastfeeding. They are angry
that they have not been told this information by their healthcare providers
and public health. Do we stop counseling against smoking, or advocating for
car seats because those who do not follow sound medical advice may feel guilty?

Breastfeeding is a serious public health care issue, not just a lifestyle
choice! If you want less obesity, and a leaner, healthier population, you will
support the OWH and the Ad Council by rolling out the Campaign, as is, NOW!

Sincerely,

Nancy E. Wight MD, FAAP, IBCLC
