editorial rant about breastfeeding protection in the workplace in Scotland)

Katie Grant: Kerr's breast strategy is fed by men
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2090-2122967,00.html

The Sunday Times - Scotland
April 09, 2006

Are Scottish ministers determined to drive fertile women out of the
workplace? Andy Kerr's pompously named Infant Feeding Strategy, which
proposes to "allow" women to breastfeed their babies or express milk at work
will be greeted with exasperated groans from bosses, both male and female.

"Allow" gives it all away. There is no law that forbids women to breastfeed
at work, so any law to "allow" can mean only one thing: extra expenditure on
obligatory breastfeeding "spaces", together with provision for all the
clamjamfrey associated with getting milk down the throats of small babies.

It seems the interfering state is again attempting to strangle every
struggling business in Scotland. And that's not all. An Infant Feeding
Strategy could only have been concocted by men or a militant brigade of
breastfeeding fanatics. For a start, let's look at the practicalities.
Breastfeeding is not just a question of discreetly producing a nipple for a
couple of minutes. Having done it three times, I can confidently say that it
is an unpredictable affair, sometimes quick, sometimes dementingly slow.
