Subject: bottom lip sucking in while feeding


I have a mum , third child with some interesting problems. First 2 babies
breastfed with little problems., Baby is 12  weeks old.  Has had painful
feeds since birth.  Has had recurrent blocked ducts and what sounds like
classic white spots on right breast.  Suffers from upper quad engorgement
when white spot occures that is partially resolved when white spot is
treated.  Is getting shooting pains during and between feeds. No other signs
of thrush.  This mum has never had a pain free feed.  The baby has always
sucked in bottom lip when attached.  Sucks in bottom lip between feeds.
Nipple comes out partically blanched and a small flat area.  Mum pull the lip out but the baby immediately suck it in. Mum is giving one bottle feed because of the pain.  I suspect that all or most of the problems are related to the poor attachment over the last 12 weeks.  Has anyone any hints to help this baby attach, unlearn the lip sucking and suckle.  Mum wants to continue to breastfeed but is at her wits end
regarding pain recurrent blockages.
