I have just gotten off the phone with a family that had some questions
and I have permission to post the situation.
Baby is 3 months old. C/S delivery, full term, average weight, mom's
second baby. Has always nursed well. Short period of jaundice that resolved
quickly. Mom is healthy and active, takes no medication and has a plentiful
milk supply. Child has gained over 5 pounds since birth and now weighs over
12 pounds.
The problem according to parents: This child sleeps all the time. After
sleeping 12 hours at night she wakes to nurse, stays awake for maybe an
hour, then goes back to sleep for several hours. Wakes to nurse again, then
goes back to sleep for several more hours. This goes on all day until she
goes down for the night at 7:30pm. When she is awake she smiles and coos,
giggles, rolls over, follows with her eyes and all the normal activities for
a child her age. Mom also reports that her total meal time at the breast is
about 6-7 minutes, then she is done. She is also only stooling about every
6-7 days, it is normal breastfed baby stool.
I have an appointment to see them on Monday but as far as I can see, she
sounds very normal. I have assured the parents that aside from the excessive
sleeping, everything else is within normal limits for a baby her age. There
first child was a holy terror for the first year of her life so this
"personality" is rather foreign to them.
My question is, Should I be looking for a "breastmilk" reason for this?
Pediatrician sees the baby regularly and is unconcerned. I really think
parents want me to see them just for reassurance and I'll admitt, most of
the baby's I see at this age don't sleep 18-20 hours a day.

P.S. In case anyone else thinks like I do, baby passed her newborn
hearing test and startles appropriately.
    Thanks in advance,
