Norma Ritter brings to our attention a work by a couple named Pearl, about
'Training up your children', from which she quotes the following, which piqued
my curiosity:
"Three-fourths of all home discipline problems would be instantly
solved if you could at any time gain your child's silent, unmoving
attention."

I am wondering which one-fourth of the home discipline problems will NOT be
instantly solved by gaining the child's 'silent, unmoving' attention. Would
that be the one-fourth arising from your pulling of your infant's hair to
'train' her not to bite you on the nipple? Whatever happened to 'logical
consequences' as a way of teaching limits?

For the record, as an item of cross-cultural curiosity, if a Norwegian teacher
or a PHN or a doctor or any of the professionals who are required by law to
report suspected cases of child abuse were to get wind of families 'training'
their own children in this way, the parents could easily lose custody of their
children. It's against the law to hit children here, even with a bare, open
hand, and certainly with a willow switch. This book would be loudly condemned
by every public authority in Scandinavia, I believe, and the authors would be
pelted with rotten tomatoes if they ever tried to visit on a promotional tour.
Taking a SWITCH to a four month old, for crying out loud! Oops, I forgot. A
well-trained four month old wouldn't dare to cry out loud.

Shocked,

no mail this week, but someone alerted me to this one and I had to respond
BTW, I don't think Norwegian law permits striking dogs either
