I do not see the campaign as 'scare tactics'. It is getting the message
out to let people know that there are risks associated with not
breastfeeding and people have a right to know this. There will be many
parents who will not want to put their new baby into that higher risk
category and some who will not believe it but the longer the message is
shared the more that message will get across. And many new mothers who
had never thought about there being a difference will know that there is.

I feel it will even cause many mothers to try harder, and not give up at
the first sign of difficulty.

We just had a 6 month old die of the flu in a community near here. I bet
he wasn't being breastfed. I could be wrong, but wouldn't it have been
nice if that mother had known and believed how important breastfeeding was
to her baby's health. And the 11 month old granddaughter of a coworker of
my husbands has been battling the flu or something for over 2 weeks. Of
course she 'weaned herself' at 3-1/2 months. I suggested she try to
convince her daughter to relactate and she looked at me like I was from
Mars.

And then there is my neighbor who is angry that she has to go to school 3
times a day to check her daughters blood sugar because she has had
diabetes since she was 3. (Now 8) She wonders why she was never told
about the diabetes risk when she was pregnant or after the birth and she
is angry. There is diabetes in the family on both sides so she definitely
would have listened.

The campaign is not to scare people but to inform them to make a choice
based upon real information.

Cheryl
