Dear Jennifer, I am sort of coming in on this at the end here, but do
you know of any research that shows that EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids)
are a galactogogue? While I agree that new moms sometimes do not eat as
well as they might, I think that milk composition stays relatively
stable except in cases of abject starvation. I hesitate, in my practice,
to recommend a lot of special things to new moms, as it does seem
daunting to some to have to go and get things at the health food store,
on top of all the other things they are doing and feeling (mostly
tired).

I also hesitate some because mothers around here, at least, tend to feel
like they have to be a saint to breastfeed, no coffee, no chocolate,
..it's like a huge list of rules that really are unnecessary for them to
follow. I like to make breastfeeding as simple as possible, helping
them to believe that their milk is the gold standard as it is.

As an aside, I also am very careful when recommending supplements, as I,
as a nurse, as well as IBCLC, have to walk a very fine line when
recommending anything like that, as it can be construed as
"prescribing," which I have no license to.

Just my thoughts. Interesting topic.... : ) Kathleen
