Karen and Toni,

I agree completely that prolonged use of oral rehydration solution (ORT)is
not beneficial in infants with gastroenteritis.  The Canadian Pediatric
Society recommend that formula fed infants take ORT for 6 hours then return
to full strength feeds.  They also recommend that breastfed infants continue
nursing.  I do not have the WHO guidelines on hand but I recall that they
say the same.

I might add that from my experience breast fed babies rarely get severe
diarrhoea and rarely require ORT.  Another plug for the obvious.
