Hi all;

This is not an urgent post by any means, but there is something that has
troubled me for several years that I do not know how to answer.  The
credentials of my fellow lactnetters far exceed my own, and I am sure that
there is someone out there who can reply to this charge.  Several years
ago, when we were living in Kentucky, a pediatrician in the group I went to
told me that "the health benefits of breastmilk have been vastly
overrated."  He went on to claim that "after the baby is 6 weeks of age,
his/her stomach acid would destroy any of the supposed health giving
properties of breastmilk" (presumably amino acids, antibodies, etc.)  Even
with all the experience I now have with breast feeding, I have not known
how to answer this charge, even though I know it to be false.  If anyone
out there could help me understand how these life-giving properties of
breastmilk and thousands like them DO withstand the digestive system and
get into the bloodstream, I would appreciate it.  I have not encountered
this charge recently, but it would be helpful to me to know the answer in
case I need to explain these things to someone in the future.
