Jumping in a bit late, I wanted to recommend from personal experience
that this mom might try visiting a hypnotherapist. For years I had an
exteme reaction to anything (other than clothing obviously) touching my
breasts--nipples in particular. It was an emotional reaction with
powerful physical tie-ins: shaking, "creepy-crawlies", etc. Therapy of
the more garden variety daignosed childhood trauma, but no root event
ever surfaced in my conscious memory. When I got pregnant I decided,
with regret, that I would simply not be able to breastfeed--the idea of
a little person with his or her *mouth* on my nipples sent me screaming
for the hills. But I also couldn't stand the idea of bottle feeding, so
after thinking about my options, I called a hypnotherapist. She had
never dealt with my particular issue in the past, but we worked together
to create a program that allowed me to come to terms with breastfeeding.
(I never did get over my aversion to others touching my breasts, or
figure out where the aversion comes from.) When baby Jack was put to the
breast about an hour after his birth by cesarean, I was able to
breastfeed with no problem. I am now looking forward eagerly to
breastfeeding this next kiddo, who we expect to arrive sometime in
January.
