I discourage mothers from too much massage--I think it can cause more inflammation. My suggested protocol for mastitis is homeopathic belladonna and castor oil compresses. Almost always, that is all it ever takes. If it does not fully resolve, either homeopathic sulphur or hepar sulph, the cell salt calc fluor and continuing castor oil takes care of it.

Thanks for that Pat. Food for thought there
She has started compressing the lump a bit more, and some thich gooey stuff is 
coming out of the nipple. Are there any cautions about this?

How do you know when you've compressed it all out?
How do you know when it's getting too much and you risk damaging the tissue ?
