Betty Crase, former director of the CBI for LLLI--now at the AAP, used to
put together an annual list of the top 10 bf issues. Betty, if you're out
there, can I post it?
My pet peeve bf crime list:
My most recent experience this week was to a teen mom from a ped, OB and
hosp nurses saying that "premature babies can't bf because it uses up too
many calories." This "premature baby was 35 weeks gest and over 6 lbs!!
When I saw the mom 1 week pp at the request of the home health nurses who
thought the pumping and giving a bottle was silly, but needed an
"objective" IBCLC to confer, the baby was latching beautifully and suckling
great (but wasn't being giving the opportunity 19/20 feedings).

Second biggest crime...missing the diagnosis of yeast when a mom complains
of stabbing pain in her breast and she's got no fever or inflamation (or
baby is pulling off breast, clicking, etc). This is followed by the common
treatment of only prescribing one Diflucan instead of a loading dose of
400mg and 2-3 weeks of 200 mg.

Third, forcing mom to wean before prescribing ANY medication--not even
bothering to look it up.

Fourth, not checking for flat or inverted nipples during pregnancy.

Fifth, intervening too quickly if milk doesn't instantly appear--and not
expecting that babies will lose up to 7-10% of bw (choose your % of
comfort).

Six, EZZOing the baby and mom into 3-4 hour schedules. Telling mom to
watch the clock and not to "watch the baby."

Seven, telling moms that night nursing or nursing beyond a year causes
"baby bottle mouth."

I could go on, but....
