Hi, everyone: I've gotten e-mail from an acquaintance who is far from
me, so I can't examine her. She has recently weaned her 5-year-old
(bless her heart!), and is having engorgement and pain. She began the
gradual process in December, and by February they were down from 6
feedings to once at bedtime, one side every other night. After stopping on
May 9 altogether, she soon developed discomfort and what sounds like
engorgement on the side the child had preferred. She tried
expressing a few drops after massage in the shower, but had to start
nursing on that side again, then tapered off and stopped nursing again on
May 23. Since then, the discomfort on that side has recurred, and in the
past 2 days the other side from which she had not nursed in a month also
became uncomfortable.
She has normal menses, and is due soon. Having spoken to LLLL about 2
weeks ago and attended a meeting on June 6, she tried cabbage leaves
starting about 36 hours ago, with no real relief as yet. She stopped
warm compresses but is still expressing a few drops in the shower. She
is not doing any unusual upper body exercises. She's reasonably sure
that there are no plugged ducts and she feels otherwise well.Any ideas to
help this lady would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Alicia.
