I ran across an interesting article in the FDA home page on breastfeeding. to view http://www.fdagov/fdac/features/895_brstfeed.html

It starts out pretty good but when it sites the possible problems it gets pretty dismal. Just an example, "For all its health benefits, breastfeeding does have some disadvantages. In the early weeks, it can be painful."
Or, "Another possible disadvantge of nursing is that it affects a woman's entire lifestyle. A nursing mother with baby-in-tow must wear clothes that enable her to nurse anywhere, or she'll have to find a private place to undress." And also under disadvantages was, "Women who plan to go back to work soon after birth will have to plan carefully if they want to breast-feed." "In either case, a nursing mother is physically tied to her baby more than a bottle-feeding mother." "Finally some women just don't feel comfortable with the idea of nursing. They don't want to handle their breasts...They may be concerned about modesty and the possibility of nursing in public." Under Tips for Breast-Feeding Success, discussions range from toughening nipples, watch for infection, expect engorgement, rest as much as possible to prevent infection.

Actually, you have to read the whole text to get the flavor of the article. Maybe its me, but it reads like text from a formula company's literature on breastfeeding. Does anyone know who or what department within the FDA to write a letter to in regard to this presentation? Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
