Jean, In a post on LACTNET referring to the high number of C/S at your
hospital, you stated, "On the positive side, we do have the babies breastfeeding
within about one hour of the Caesarean (I like to have them skin-to-skin)."

I am the Baby Friendly Hospital Coordinator for a large county hospital in El
Paso, TX. I was curious about the protocols in your hospital that make it
possible to put baby STS with moms within the first hour after a section. Our
hospital does not have enough labor and delivery rooms so moms are rushed to
recovery and babies go to the transition nursery and it can take up to five or
six hours, or more, for them to be reunited on the post partum ward. The
logistics of caring for a couplet post-op seems to be the sticking point here. Who
cares for baby while mom is in the recovery room? What are the criteria the
mother and baby must meet for baby to be skin to skin? How long are they
allowed to stay like this? Where does mother go after surgery and are there "baby
nurses" there? How long before she is moved to her postpartum room?

I realize that some of these questions may seem odd depending on the setup in
your facility. Obviously, I ask these questions without benefit of knowing
the layout of your hospital or even what is considered standard in terms of how
moms and babies are treated or where skin to skin and breastfeeding fall on
the list of priorities for the doctors and other staff.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Sincerely,
Christine Pillado
