I am surprised at the negative twist on the advice given to the mother who had breast reduction surgery that Mandy mentioned. There is a big difference between being advised that you "may not be able to breastfeed" and "it is very likely will be able to breastfeed, but we don't know whether or not you may have some reduction in the supply that means you may have to use some additional milk". To date, I have not yet encountered a mother who had a breast reduction who wasn't able to make some milk -- usually a fair proportion of the needs of their infant. Women who were given a positive spin on her ability to make milk typically went on to make more milk than those who were given the negative, "you won't be able to breastfeed advice". So, I don't know if you are in direct contact with the friend who has had the surgery -- but I would find some way of transmitting that more positive message to her.

Best regards,
Susan Burger
