Karleen and Sheila--

I have thought of this every time I walk down the baby formula/paraphenalia
isle (and think, "Don't need ANY of this stuff.") and see mothers standing
there making potentially life altering decisions for their child.
I think there might be some supermarkets (read locally owned) that might be
willing to advertise this service especially if most/many of their clients are
WIC recipients. I spoke to the owner of our local market and he said that
the WIC vouchers for formula are really a mess of red tape for him to
process. I wonder if they (store owners) could see the advantage to having this
service advertised in their store which would lead to more mothers using other
vouchers (the ones breastfeeding mothers receive for carrots, tunafish etc.)
AND building a good working relationship with a network that could expand
their customer base. The store I have in mind here already offers a 10% discount
to military families (my husband is Active Duty) and we don't shop anywhere
else because of this (and that it is a nice, clean store). Any store that is
offering promotions directed toward a specific population might be more
receptive.

Breaking into a major chain would be more difficult but definitely worth the
effort.

I realize this message addresses the system in the US but I am sure there
are similar systems in other countries where mothers are issued vouchers for
food and formula that they redeem at a grocery store.

Would it be possible to come up with a business proposal that we could all
use at any grocery store?

Subject: re. if you want to quit....

This sounds wonderful to *us, bf supporters*, but can you really see
supermarkets or milk manufacturers being willing to promote a service that would
decrease their profits?

They profit hugely from breastfeeding failure, & wouldn't want a customer to
even consider reversing that trend:(((

Great idea though, Karleen!

>Yesterday I was in the supermarket and walked past a mum standing in
front
of the rows of infant formula trying to work out what to buy. It
occurred to
me that it would be wonderful if we had advertising of breastfeeding
similar
to that for quitting smoking on cigarette packs... Imagine if in each
supermarket in each formula row there were signs "If you need
breastfeeding
help please call the Australian Breastfeeding Association on XXXXX for
assistance" and "Weaning can be reversed, if you wish to start
breastfeeding
again please call the Australian Breastfeeding Association on XXXXX"
Now why couldn't that happen??
