I think there have been some excellent points made about being inclusive, especially in our language. But I also think it's okay to want to look at the science more closely before assuming that the milk that a person who is biologically born a man is going to produce, is the same as the milk that a woman who is biologically a woman is going to produce. It's my understanding that none of these hormones, including birth control hormones have been tested on children past puberty. In other words, we are giving mothers hormones during lactation, and they have followed their children up to 16 years old, but no one has looked at them as adults. I don't think we can just assume that is all is well past puberty. And the studies that were done, were not that large. Do these children grow up to have a higher risk of breast cancer or other illness as adults? Also, the testing has been done mostly on hormones given for birth control, not always the same type and amount of hormones given to transgender persons. Also, men and women are biologically different in body fat composition, skeletal muscle mass, hormones, etc. Could there immune systems function differently during lactation with regards to the way in which it protects the baby? Isn't it okay for us to ask these questions and want to do the research and not just assume the milk is the same? I think there are lots of questions yet to be answered. Even though many have strong feelings about this issue, I think it would be good to try to put them aside and look at this from a medical standpoint while being sensitive and inclusive in our language and actions.
Sincerely,
Tricia Shamblin, RN, IBCLC

Hi Wendy,
My understand is that all the medications involved are those deemed to be safe to take while breastfeeding and are medications that mothers born female also may take.
