A couple of years ago- around the time the articles about "yuppy mothers
nursing their babies to death" were in the papers in the US- an experienced
mother in my La Leche League group had her second baby. She was very
concerned because the baby's urine was reddish to orange. She told the
nurses in the hospital that she was concerned that her baby might be
dehidrated. She was told not to worry -it was "normal". A week later this
mother took her baby to the pediatrician for a routine check up. At this
vbisit the doctor got quite upset ans told the mother that red/orange urine
is not normal- the baby WAS dehidrated and now this baby is brain damaged.
Forever.

Maybe the urine color wasn't the indicator that something was wrong- I don't
know. But I do believe that when a mother expersses concern that something
is wrong- especially an experienced mother- we need to listen. This
mother's instincts KNEW that something was wrong. I imagine that in many
many instances the mother *knows* things are not right long before the
experts pick up on it!
