Now I have to tell a sweet story. Years ago I had a young first time
pregnant intern at my meeting. I had known her since she was a teen. I had
just come back from a conf that discussed the tummy to tummy idea and was
all excited to show the moms what I had learned. I used a teddy bear and
showed them the idea of how to get the baby in the right place to latch on
(remember this was a long time ago :-) The intern went into labor that
night and had her baby the next morning. The nurse brought the baby in,
plopped him in her lap and said "nurse him," as she left :-( The intern
told me that "there I sat with the baby in my lap, looking at the ceiling
and I panicked. Then I remember you showing us tummy to tummy, picked him
up, held him and he latched on!" She went on to nurse 3 babies through her
internship and residency. She became quite adept at hand expression :-)
