I appreciate the input so many of you have given. This will not be
an easy battle, but my fellow LCs at our hospital are all in accord
that we can't just let this one slide by without some effort on our
part. (I'm not naive enough to believe we will get it banned, but
we will aim in that direction.) The day after I spoke to the
manager, I noticed that 2 of the 16 moms I saw as inpatients had
been given formula. (We won't get into the reasons, valid or not.)
Both were Exxxxx Now 2 could, of course, be coincidence. However,
I decided to start keeping track at least for the next week when I
will be on for 5 days in a row. I plan to track every breastfeeding
baby that got formula for any reason and will include:
   Reason for supplementing
Whose decision to supplement - MD order, Mother request, or RN
suggestion/decision.
Was the mother asked if she had a brand preference? If not, did
the nurse choose.

If we are able to track a definite nurse choice of Exxxx, I then
will go back to the manager who said, "Our nurses don't decide which
formula to use. They wouldn't be influenced in their choice by the
pormotion." and confront her (nicely, of course) with the data.

I would love to have this experiment fail because none of the
breastfeeding babies get any formula, but I've learned not to expect
too much.

Some have asked where this is taking place. Those who wanted to use
this as an example of how the formula reps work, feel free to do so,
but for the record, please jsut state that it is in the Milwaukee
metro area or simply Southeast Wisconsin. By identifying the city
as Waukesha, it zeros in on the exact hospital.

The basic problem always goes back to the fact that too many people
just don't "buy" the fact that there is such a significant
difference between mom's milk and "that other stupid stuff". Until
we can make a big dent in this thinking, they won't "get" why we
make such a big deal about formula promotions. We do keep putting
facts before people, but it can be frustrating when it takes so long
to make a dent.

Winnie Mading, IBCLC, standing firm, but not holding my breath!
