I had an "interesting" experience today with one of our resident doctors.
He ordered a Depo-Provera injection for a mom who was to be discharged at
24 hrs pp. The mom asked me if I had any info re. the impact on milk supply.
She had read there could be a problem. I showed her Tom Hale's 2000 book,
which states that there is no published research on this, but there have
been numerous anectdotal reports of lower production, particularly when
given 24-48 hr pp. The mom decided to wait a few days and think about
it. The resident told me it was inappropriate for me to give her that
information because there are no published studies and HE thought that the
risk of an unwanted pregnancy was greater than the benefit of having a good
milk supply. I said I thought the mother was capable of making that
decision herself.
I'm wondering if there are any other reports about this, in addition to Tom
Hale's book. I would like to share them with this resident.

Thanks,
C. Bean-Moody, BS,IBCLC
