The term "milk fever" is an outdated term. I have not heard it in years, but
remember back in the 70's and early 80's hearing women talk about it. When
my Yorkie had puppies in 1980, my vet warned me about the possibility of this
occurring. I never was quite sure what it was. In my 1980 copy of "The
Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" under the heading of "SORE BREAST Plugged
Duct?" it says:
"It sometimes happens that a mother will notice a reddened area on the breast
or near the nipple and/or a very tender spot, or a sore lump in the breast,
sometimes accompanied by fever. The first thing to consider would be the
possibility of a plugged milk duct. (Some doctors refer to this as "caked
breast" or "milk fever" but stress that it is not a true breast infection
since in most cases there are no bacteria present.)"
I have loaned out all my current copies of WAB, so I am curious if this
information is still there. I tend to doubt it.
