Dear Barbara, Chris, and lactnetters at large,
I have been enjoying the list of breastfeeding crimes. What a clever
approach, Gail!
Personally, I would not have lack of assessment for flat nipples on the list.
The (very) limited research that we have on the use of shells to treat flat
nipples shows that the moms using shells were actually more likely not to bf
than mom's with no treatment, and I find that mom's who do the 'pinch test'
prenatally and feel that they've 'flunked' get all sorts of anxiety over
whether or not they'll be able to bf. If we can't do anything about it
prenatally, why the early assessment?
I would watch them closely to make sure that bf gets off to a good start,
definitely no rigid artificial nipples, and help as needed. Some babies could
latch on to the side of a building, while others seem to need a more defined
nipple. But they're not tagged in utero.
JMHO.
