IBCLCs should all embrace the stricter standards and requirements which
would help eliminate this "fudging" factor, IMO, and for other good reasons.
Supervised hours and hours that apply to the different areas of the exam
blueprint would be a better prep for entry into the profession until a
university program or similar is standard. Instead of a letter of reference
(now I am not really sure what a supervisor of an RN or other sends to
IBLCE) maybe an affidavit or other legal document would be better. Or have
the candidate describe at length or provide a log of hours. There will
always be liars and "fudgers" but perhaps this would lessen their numbers.
Some hospitals do pay costs of exams and conferences, or partially pay. This
is becoming less and less common in the USA due to budget cutbacks and
managed care etc.
