Last night I watched an epsiode of "Maternity Ward" which is a reality TV
show where the cameras follow a doctor or two in labour and delivery. One
woman came in and the doctor commented that "she was interested in trying
alternative birthing practices." I'm thinking - okay, this must mean a water
birth perhaps? A squatting birth? I was very interested to see what she
might be planning.

Nope, alternative birthing practices meant - she didn't want an epidural.
She wanted an unmedicated, vaginal birth. How the heck did normal birth get
to be "alternative"????

This depressed me considerably. I was very glad when, after a long labour
the mother finally did give birth without medication. As the mother nurses
her baby (only baby on the show I saw go to the breast), the doctor comments
"this mother and baby will have a special bond." Yeah, but it's so
"alternative..."
