Dear Deborah,

It may be that the IV has a solution with more complete nutrition called
TPN
(total parenteral nutrition)(parenteral = outside of the gut) that
contains proteins,
fats, carbohydrates, vitimins and minerals. Often the baby gets in this
order (and
usually in some overlapping combinations) IV with just glucose and
minerals, TPN, milk by tube to stomach or small bowel and/or by
mouth in slowly increasing volumes until "full feeds" are reached.

Some people use drops of colostrum for mouth care for the infant even if
they
are not yet willing to use minimal enteral (through the gut) feedings.
