Phyllis, this is new to me. Like you, I think someone must have
misinterpreted something. Last I heard, timed feedings went out of
style long ago and I've never seen a study where length of feeding was
associated with milk intake. Good luck in getting to the bottom of this.

Warm regards,

> After having a 4-hour training on BrFdg given by our State Dept of Health, some RNs came back with a strange statement.
> They said they were taught that baby should feed for 1 minute per pound of body weight at each feeding in the first 24 hours, but frequency is on demand. Huh? "Oh, yes!! I wrote it down," they say. And someone handed out cards with that information. But no one could show me their card.

> I had attended the first presentation of that training and there was NOTHING said that remotely resembled that statement.
> I asked one of the State instructors (an IBCLC) and she confirmed: that concept is NOT anywhere in the State's training.

> Now I 'm wondering if "someone" (not the State instructor) actually said "feed 1 ml per pound of body weight per feed if baby is supplemented in the first 24 hours". (But where does the on-demand part fit in?) This gets closer to the Belly Balls and the average measurement of 7mls stomach capacity for a newborn in the first 24 hours.

> I'm still seeking clarification among the RNs who report being taught that concept, and I want the source of it. Several of us are preparing our own supplemental clinical practice training for the Mat-Child staff and we will address that issue.

> Interesting how things get twisted around.
> It feels like we are playing that kids' game called Rumor.
