I thought I would share this comment that I heard from a frustrated Mom
today.
She had come for an outpatient visit for evaluation of her extreme nipple
pain when latching. The baby was one week old and had some clenching and
tightness initially when feeding. Her nipples were very sore with cracks at
the base. We worked on good latch and positioning techniques, (as her leg
pumped up and down for about the first 30 seconds of the latch).
She told me of her sadness that she was not able to have an epidural-free
birth, and now that she was not really enjoying breastfeeding because of the
pain. She had read somewhere (Dr. Sears I think) that she should have her
little "station", with a glass of water, her comfy chair and footstool, and
fruit. As she was nursing the other night, in the only chair in the house
that is comfortable, struggling with the baby and her pain, both in her
breasts and her bottom, she cried to her husband, "I just want to get to
the fruit!!".
She was feeling better after we talked, armed with better latch
techniques which she did herself in the office. The baby's weight was 8 more
ounces than 4 days ago. I know within a short time she will be in her comfy
chair, eating her fruit!
