Mary,

It seems that the shape of the nipple is less important (and just an
individual preference with babies) than the size of the hole.  It seems
important that the hole is small (which the Avent newborn nipple is) so the
milk doesn't come out too easily and get the baby used to being lazy and
getting plenty of milk.
