Forwarding this on behalf of Cathy Genna who *somehow* has already posted 3
times today.
Cathy responds to Nina Berry who asked about coordination of breathing and
swallowing.

"No, infants are not able to breathe and swallow simultaneously. Dr.
Palmer has corrected his presentations to reflect this information, and is
working on correcting his website as well.

The coordination between swallowing and breathing is so intricate in
breastfed infants, that it looked simultaneous to observers with less
sophisticated tools than our current ones. We now know that swallowing
occurs mostly in the end-expiratory pause in bf infants. This gives maximal
protection against aspiration, since the baby breathes out, swallows, and
then breathes in when the swallow is done. If the baby is not fully done
breathing when the swallow is triggered, at least the air is going up and
not pulling liquid down!

Old ideas die hard, and it can be very very difficult to keep up with new
thought and research even in one's own narrow field. I'm sure some of the
things I'm saying will be proven wrong in the future.

Was it Mark Twain who said "It's not what you don't know that will get you,
it's what you know that ain't so."?
Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC NYC"
