First,I have to apologize for the empty email with all of the old
messages. My name is Marlene Gawarkiewicz (G). I live in Philadelphia. I have
been a LLL leader for over 10 years. I just passed the exam and am slowly
starting a private practice. (Really slowly!)

I grew up in the military. My father was an officer, so I probably didn't
have a window into the same world that many of these moms live in. While
I am against the war, I feel for these women. Many times they are in
impossible situations. Also, many of them really want to be in the military.

Here is where I bring it back to breastfeeding and something that I am
really interested in. When we have really strong feelings about something,
say whether or not mothers in the military should be allowed to stay with
their babies, or if mother's should use pacifiers, how do we meet their needs
without our feelings coming through? We are supposed to meet a mom where she
is at, but how do we define this? I started thinking about this recently
when I was working with a Leader Applicant. I'm great at explaining how to
actively listen and reflect back to make sure that you understand what the
mom is saying. The point that I have been thinking a lot about lately is
what you say after you reflect back, because at some point in the
conversation, we need to offer suggestions and support. At some point we need to
make our own voice heard.

If you have any ideas, thoughts or resources, I would love to hear about
them. My husband, who does research on anxiety disorders, and I have been
talking about this a lot lately and we may eventually write a paper together
about this topic.

It's nice to be here,

Marlene
